Microsoft is ready to kill the free VPN service included with its application to defend Windows 11, Macos, Android and iOS. The reason? Lack of use and effectiveness.
As reported for the first time by Windows Latter, the Big Tech Gig Gig Giant has notified users of the change through their support page. The date for the end of the Virtual Private Network Service (VPN) is established for February 28, 2025.
While it has time until the end of the month to find a better free VPN replacement, other Microsoft defense features: device protection, identity theft and credit monitoring (alone)) will not be affected.
Why does Microsoft eliminate its VPN function from the security suite?
According to Microsoft’s own words: “Our goal is to ensure that you and your family remain safer online. We routinely evaluate the use and effectiveness of our characteristics. As such, we are eliminating the function of protection of privacy and We will invest in new areas that will improve align with the needs of the client. “
If you ever use the Microsoft VPN function to defend, this announcement may not be a total surprise. Launched in 2023, Microsoft’s VPN tool came with enough considerable limitations compared to some of the best VPN services in the market.
To start, it does not allow you to choose the location that you want your Internet connection to be reduced. This means that you cannot use the Microsoft tool, for example, as a transmission VPN to watch your favorite television programs when you are abroad, or to avoid internet censorship.
Another possible reason behind the lack of use is that Microsoft only launched the VPN function for individual and family subscribers of Microsoft 365 throughout the United Kingdom and the United States. As the last of Windows points out, Microsoft originally shared plans to defend the VPN to reach new regions “but that never happened.”
Once Microsoft withdraws its Defensor VPN function for good, the action of Windows 11, macOS and iOS users is not required. However, if you are using Android, you should manually eliminate your device’s VPN profile if you ever used this tool. You can do it by addressing your phone configuration, taking advantage of the VPN and the Microsoft Defender VPN profile to delete it.
This is not the first time that a great technological giant has decided to kill its VPN functionality due to lack of use. Google sent its Google One VPN for similar reasons in June 2023.
As mentioned above, Microsoft VPN users defend until the end of the month to find an alternative. If you are not familiar with the VPN world, you can verify all the benefits of using a VPN in 2025 here.
