- Microsoft has gathered a new promotional video
- Sale the benefits of transferring to a new PC through the backup application
- However, it is also pressing a Subscription of OneDrive, but there are free alternatives
Microsoft has published a video clip that explains how easy it is to move to Windows 11 using the backup application to transfer the content of its Windows 10 PC (or most of them, anyway).
Windows last detected the new promotional video of Microsoft, which shows how easy it is to make the jump to a PC with Windows 11 (see the clip below).
As the video makes clear, you can back up your personal files, the Windows configuration and also some applications of your Windows 10 PC, and transfer them directly to a Windows 11 computer with a minimum of fuss (or that is the idea).
To be fair to Microsoft, it also points out the main captures with the use of Windows backup application to change a PC with Windows 11.
That is, you cannot carry third parties applications with you: they need manual reinstatement, only Microsoft Store applications can be transported (their pins have left them and can click on the relevant pin to restore the application), and which is limited to 5GB of files by default.
The 5GB restriction is in place because the backup that creates the Windows application is stored in OneDrive, so you need an account with the Microsoft cloud storage locker. The basic free account only has 5 GB of cloud storage, and if you want more space than that, you will have to pay for a OneDrive subscription.
Analysis: Other options for PC migration that are free
Therefore, the length and short is, if your data and configurations ascend more than 5 GB, which will surely be in most cases, then you will need a plan paid in OneDrive to ensure that Windows Backup transfer all your things to a new Windows 11 PC.
In other words, this is Microsoft that is not so suggestive by pressing a ONEDRive subscription (not for the first time, it could add). If you want to use the Microsoft built -in Windows Backup Copy installation, there is no alternative to OneDrive. If you paid cloud storage with another supplier, you don’t offer an option to use that cloud locker.
There are alternatives to pay a subscription to OneDrive to ensure that it has enough capacity to completely transfer all its files to a new PC. It can simply be very selective about what you choose so that Microsoft’s backup application approaches, and maybe it stops a large part of the multimedia files (photos, videos) that you can have on your computer.
To move those multimedia files, you can simply copy them to an external unit, and then, then move them manually to the new PC; Okay, that is a bit of additional discomfort, but it is not really a big problem. (If this route follows, do not delete the files from the original PC until they are transferred safely; always be sure to keep multiple copies. Never trust a single copy of any data, as in this case, if the external unit goes kaput, it has lost everything).
Another eventual option will be the PC to PC migration function in the Windows backup application, which transfers its files from one computer to another through the local network (without the need for OneDrive). However, you will still need a Microsoft account, and in this case, applications will not be carried at all (not even those of Microsoft Store).
Even so, this will be a useful alternative in the future, but the feature is not yet live. In fact, it has not appeared in Windows 10 at all, only the non -functional shell of the PC migration function to PC is currently available in Windows 11, but I can only assume that Microsoft is working to execute this before October 2025, when the Windows 10 is dry.
In particular, however, Microsoft does not mention the migration of PC to PC in the previous clip video. Little, as noted, it still does not work, so the company has an excuse, but I bet that there will not be a promotional video campaign for this function for this function when it is discussed. Unlike Pushing OneDrive, this will not give Microsoft any immediate financial benefit (potential).
