China has deployed 400 high performance servers under the sea as part of an expanding underwater data center in Lingshui, Hainan.
China Media Group says that this infrastructure will complete the calculations of one year for an average PC in just a second and can allow the care assistant to handle 7,000 conversations per second.
The recently installed module, which measures 18 meters long and 3.6 meters in diameter, is linked to an existing installation to form a computer cluster designed to admit applications driven by AI, providing computer power equivalent to 30,000 pc of high -end range that operate simultaneously.
Expanding the infrastructure of the AI of China
Xu Tan, Vice President of Highlander, a maritime technology firm that is in Shenzhen and a key player in the expansion of the China Submarine Data Center, highlighted the advantages of submerged data facilities.
“With the advent of the 5G era and even 6g, the data will increase exponentially, and the construction of underwater data centers could meet the future demands of this growth,” he said.
The Hainan Submarine Data Center, first launched in 2023, was the first commercial project of its kind. According to CGTN, the long -term plan implies implementing up to 100 data cabins in multiple phases.
The project is aligned with China’s strategy to improve their AI capabilities, with 219 smart computer centers launched in 81 cities from 2022 to 2024, according to IDC (originally in Chinese).
The firm also projects that China’s intelligent computer capacity will grow at an annual rate of 33.9% to 2027, playing a crucial role in AI research, data processing and automation in various industries.
Almost 10 companies have signed agreements to use the computer power of underwater data centers for the training of AI models, industrial simulations, games and marine research.
However, this project will require thousands of submerged servers, and specific hardware to be used is still unknown. It is likely that high -performance AI accelerators will be considered, such as NVIDIA or Ascend 910 H100 of Huawei.
China has been pressing for national alternatives, so they are also advanced possibilities of companies such as Biren Technology or Loongson.
While China advances with plans to deploy up to 40,000 underwater servers in the coming years, US companies have adopted a more cautious approach. Microsoft previously experienced a submarine data center off the coast of the United Kingdom in 2018, but after recovering it in 2020, the company left its submarine data center plans from the National Park.
