- The Microsoft Copilot server on Discord has suffered apparent censorship
- Posts mentioning ‘Microslop’ were blocked
- Microsoft reportedly took further action, including limiting or blocking several channels.
If Microsoft was hoping an unfortunate nickname for the company coined earlier this year would go away, it doesn’t, and a new incident is unlikely to help.
Windows Latest reports that the official Microsoft Copilot Discord server implemented a block on posts that mentioned ‘Microslop’, the nickname that Microsoft’s CEO accidentally brought to life with a comment about AI in early January 2026.
The tech site is a member of this Discord community and discovered that using the word in a post meant the message was blocked. As Windows Latest shows in a video, they received a notification from server moderators that the post was blocked due to an “inappropriate phrase.”
However, since moderation is carried out through a simple keyword filter, it was quite easy to get around. Windows Latest noted that simply changing ‘Microslop’ to ‘Micr0slop’ (replacing the letter with the number zero) was enough to get it approved for release and obviously completely preserve the meaning.
Cue a group of people who invented variations of the nickname, and this apparently caused Microsoft management staff to restrict parts of the server, supposedly blocking or throttling various channels. Windows Latest says publishing permissions were also disabled for many offenders and message histories were hidden.
Earlier today, the tech site notes: “Several channels are showing limited visibility or blocked states, indicating that the server was indeed put into containment mode while moderators attempted to regain control of the conversation.”
Analysis: discordant times
Presumably these “containment” measures will be temporary, but it’s a pretty draconian stance on Microsoft’s part here. Well, that’s fair: this is Microsoft Copilot’s official space on Discord and the company has the right to maintain an appropriate tone for discussions there. Microsoft certainly wants to maintain a constructive forum and believes that throwing insults like ‘Microslop’ is neither appropriate nor helpful.
I understand that, but at the same time, the response of a relatively strong level of censorship that has apparently been introduced just doesn’t seem good. Even if Microsoft has the right to do so on these channels, the company’s moderators risk making the situation worse.
As you can see from the
Some people in that X thread are already making up alternative nicknames to ‘Microslop’, like ‘Slopilot’, for example. In fact, this is a double criticism of Microsoft, not only with a reference to “drain” but also with an alternative meaning “slow” which can be read here.
As one user on
Microsoft is trying to repair its reputation and is rumored to be “reevaluating its AI strategy in Windows 11” and refocusing on fixing the operating system’s basics, but episodes like this won’t help that effort.
