- Microsoft engineers undertake to make Winui Open Source
- But first it must be separated from the Windows patented code
- Github will become the home of Winui for the community
Microsoft has confirmed that Winui will become “Code of True Code”, however, deep tangles with the patented Windows Code could put this goal even further.
Windows UI Library (Winui) is a user interface frame to build modern, fluid and receptive user interfaces in Windows, which works with Win32, .NET and C ++ applications.
However, although the project lacks a specific completion date, the main software engineer, Beth PAN, shared more details about Microsoft’s plans gradually in a Github publication.
Winui is on a way to become an open source completely open
“While we are not ready to commit ourselves to a specific completion date to complete all the milestones, we are actively working towards him,” Pan wrote.
The four phases of the Microsoft Plan begin with a more frequent synchronization of internal commitments with Github, starting after Wasdk 1.8, which is established for an August launch of 2025.
From there, Microsoft will allow external developers to clone and build the repository with complete configuration documents, after which third party developers will be allowed to contribute and execute tests.
The final stage will cause Github to become the “main place for development, problems monitoring and community participation.”
However, because much of the code base touches the patented Windows layers, Microsoft is planning a gradual and deliberate transition to separate what can be open source.
“Our current approach is in the fundamental work that unlocks the value for taxpayers and increases transparency,” PAN added.
A separate Github Project Board has been established for the community to collaborate with Microsoft in the future.
Community responses have been generally positive and solidarity, and many express their satisfaction that the project living with the support of Microsoft.
