- The connections used by the remote desktop application will be blocked from May 27
- The new Windows application occupies its place, but there are already known problems
- Must manually uninstall the previous application and install the new
Microsoft’s Senior Product Manager, Hilary Braun, has confirmed that the company will leave support for remote desktop application from May 27, 2025.
The services will live, but the application will be replaced by the Windows application, described as a new unified link door for remote connections.
Continuous access to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Dev Box will require users to go to the new application, which has an extensive range on multiple platforms.
The remote desktop application is being replaced by the Windows application
The Microsoft support page confirms that the Windows application will operate in Windows and MacOS desks, mobile devices and mobile browsers iOS/iPados and web browsers. It is also available in the preview for Android, Chromeos and Quest devices.
The Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, remote desktop services and PC remote services are handled through the updated application, however, there is limited functionality for remote desktop services and PC on Windows web devices and browsers, according to the support article.
However, the transition seems to be almost soft. Braun advised users to require access to the remote desktop application that will soon be despised to use a remote desktop connection “until the connection type is available in the Windows application.”
Redmond has also published a list of known topics and limitations for the Windows application.
Uninstalling the remote desktop application follows the same process as deleting other applications. Just as that application, the Windows application can be downloaded from the Microsoft store.
In addition to the transition between the two, Braun also reminded companies that update their internal resources, such as the user guide, the documentation of the aid table and administrative materials to reflect the changes and make the change softer for employees and users.
Meanwhile, customers have a little more than two weeks before connections with Windows 365, the Azure virtual desktop and the Microsoft development box through the remote desktop application are blocked.
