Miftah sees Fazl as a strong candidate for prime minister

LAHORE:

Praising the political prowess of the cleric-politician, former Finance Minister and Awaam Pakistan Party (APP) leader Miftah Ismail has said that JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman could potentially serve as the country’s prime minister for a period of one to one and one -half year.

While speaking on Express News’ ‘Centre Stage’ program on Friday, Miftah noted that politicians of Fazl’s stature were rare in Pakistan, adding that the JUI-F chief could be a suitable candidate to lead as prime minister for 18 years. months.

Commenting on the ongoing talks, he highlighted the importance of negotiations in reducing political tensions.

“At least during the talks there will be no protests or violence. Dialogue is always a good step and should continue,” he added.

The APP leader further emphasized that the ultimate solution to Pakistan’s challenges lies in holding elections and respecting the will of the people.

Referring to pressing economic issues, the former Finance Minister sharply criticized the government for its failed attempt to privatize PIA and attributed the failure to a lack of political will.

Commenting on the recent performance of the stock market, Ismail noted that the stock market has soared due to lower interest rates and could rise further.

However, this, he added, has nothing to do with government policies.

Additionally, he criticized the current administration for prioritizing political achievements over necessary economic reforms. “The Prime Minister has avoided imposing taxes and has refrained from pension reform.”

“Economic reforms are not on their agenda because political interests are prioritized,” he added.

Noting a 7% reduction in imports, the former Finance Minister warned, however, that high tax rates could deter investment unless positive economic indicators are established.
