Mike Vratabel exposes expectations for Patriots players under their leadership

The New England Patriots have won six Super Bowl titles, but, in recent years, Patriots have experienced more losses than victories.

New England has finished four of the last five seasons with a losing record. Mike Vratabel, who played the Patriots supporter for eight seasons and won three Super Bowls with the team, now has the task of changing the franchise once proud.

During his game days, Vrabel learned what was needed to reach great heights in the NFL. This week, the coach of the first year Patriots presented some of the expectations it has for the players.

As the 2025 NFL draft approaches, the Patriots are starting their low season program. Some key points of the first formal direction of Vrababe to the team earlier this week have circulated on social networks.

Players must leave cell phones in their personal bags.

“We all have cell phones,” said Vrabel. “Most of you have more than one, in fact. Just leave the cell phone in your bag. Just keep the phone.”

He also wants players to arrive on time. If a player arrives late, Vrabel told them to communicate. But neither does he want him to become a habit.

Vrabel then asked the players to resist pulling sweatshirts on their heads during meetings.

“We are building our own identity,” Vrabel said. “We are building our own team. We are building our own program. There will be things within what they are different … and it is how we do them as good as they can be as individual, as a player and as a team. That is our goal, and you have to begin to understand that, why we are doing what we are doing.”

Vrabel also emphasized that employees working at the team headquarters are there to “help” players to succeed, but they are not the “housewives” of athletes.

“They are here to help you do their job,” said Vrabel. “They are not here to be your valet, to be your housewife, be your butler. Do you get to where I go? We are going to treat those people with the greatest respect.”

The Patriots and Bill Belichick agreed to separate in January 2024 after the Patriots only appeared in a playoff game in the four seasons after Tom Brady’s departure.

Shortly after the departure of Belichick, Jerrod Mayo was appointed coach of the Patriots. May was fired after the end of the 2024 season, and Vrabel took over. Vratabel was the coach of the Tennessee Titans of 2018-23 and spent the 2024 season as a consultant with the Cleveland Browns.
