Team USA isn’t exactly known for its dominance at the Winter Olympics, but the Americans are hoping to change the narrative when it comes to the 2026 Milan Cortina Games.
The Americans finished third in the medal table at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and fourth at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. The United States finished with the most medals at the 2010 Vancouver Games, but only had nine gold medals to show for it.
The Team USA roster will look to turn its fortunes around at this year’s Games and somehow finish ahead of Norway, Germany and Canada.
Team USA will fight hard to get gold. The Olympic Games will begin on Friday. Read below for some of the athletes to watch out for.

Alysa Liu

Alysa Liu will look to get on the Olympic podium for the first time in her career. She will compete in the women’s singles event with Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito. She finished sixth at the 2022 Olympics, but she was only 16 at the time.
Now 20 years old, Liu enters the Winter Games having had a successful campaign in 2025. He won gold medals at the World Championships and in the Grand Prix final. Liu also earned silver medals in 2025 and 2026 at the US Championships.

Chloe Kim

Chloe Kim has wowed audiences in the snowboard halfpipe event and will look to continue her dominance in the event in 2026. Kim debuted as a 17-year-old at the 2018 Olympic Games, becoming the youngest woman to win an Olympic gold medal in snowboarding. He continued in 2022 with another gold medal.
Kim is seeking her third consecutive gold medal, but under more difficult circumstances. He dislocated his shoulder three weeks before the Milan Cortina Games. She said she was “good to go” to the Olympic Games and that she will try to overcome the injury.
Elana Meyers Taylor

Elana Meyers Taylor is back at the Olympics and looking to make more history in her fifth Winter Games. He will compete for the US bobsleigh team in the monobob competition. In 2022, she earned the fifth Olympic medal of her career and became the first Black woman to achieve this feat.
This month, he hopes to return to glory as Team USA attempts to put on a dominant display in Italy.
Erin Jackson

Erin Jackson made history in 2022 when she became the first Black woman to win a medal in speed skating. Not only did he get a medal, but he also won gold in the 500 meter race. Jackson is back on Team USA and looking to get another medal.
Jackson will again participate in the 500-meter race with Sarah Warren. She will also compete alongside Brittany Bowe in the 1,000-meter race.
Lindsey Vonn

Lindsey Vonn has qualified for this year’s Winter Olympics and will compete in the downhill alpine skiing event. She won two World Cup downhill races and was set to compete in her fifth Olympic Games, until Friday when she suffered a devastating injury.
Vonn has not said whether the injury will prevent her from competing in Milan Cortina, but she promised that her Olympic dream was not over.

He has one gold and two bronze medals on his resume.
Hilary Caballero

Hilary Knight is one of the most recognizable faces of the United States women’s hockey team. He has been with the United States as a teenager and was on the team that won the silver medal at the 2006 4 Nations Cup.
Knight earned a gold medal when the women’s team won in 2018 in Pyeongchang. He has three silver medals, including those from the 2022 Beijing Games. The team lost to Canada in the matchup. He said the 2026 Winter Olympics will be his last Games.
“I’ve grown in this program and it’s given me a lot. I’m at peace. And I’m grateful that I can stay healthy and be able to go out whenever I want. It’s a great privilege,” she said via Olympics.com.
Madison Chock and Evan Bates

Madison Chock will compete with Evan Bates in the ice dance discipline of the figure skating competition. The husband and wife duo were part of the gold medal-winning team event in 2022 and will look to lead the United States back to first place in 2026.
Chock and Bates have never medaled on the Olympic stage, but the two have taken home gold medals at the last five U.S. Championships and the last three Grand Prix Finals.
This could well be the year in which they put Olympic gold around their necks.

Maxim Naumov

Maxim Naumov overcame an extremely difficult year to earn a spot on Team USA’s roster for the men’s individual figure skating competition. Naumov’s parents were passengers on a commercial flight that collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter in Washington, DC.
“They were beautiful people. They were incredibly kind,” he told NBC’s “TODAY” show last March. “The only way out is to pass. There is no other way. There are no options but to move forward. I no longer have the strength, the passion, the drive or the dedication of one person. That is three people.”
He returned to skating on March 2 and strived to make the Olympic team. He won a bronze medal at the US Championships and was named to the Olympic team.
Mikaela Shiffrin

Mikaela Shiffrin had a difficult 2022 Winter Olympics, to say the least. She was the favorite to take home some gold for the U.S., but she didn’t finish the giant slalom or the slalom and then ninth in the super-G.
He has since recovered and is preparing to take the podium this year. She won gold medals at the 2023 World Championships in giant slalom and in team combined at the 2025 World Championships. In 2021 she won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

For the first time in more than 10 years, NHL stars will return to the ice to represent the U.S. in men’s hockey at the Winter Olympics.
The American roster includes goaltenders Jeremy Swayman, Jake Oettinger and Connor Hellebuyck, forwards Brady Tkachuk, Jack Eichel, JT Miller, Matt Boldy, Vincent Trocheck, Matthew Tkachuk, Dylan Larkin, Brock Nelson, Auston Matthews, Jake Guentzel, Tage Thompson, Kyle Connor, Jack Hughes and Clayton Keller and defensemen Zach Werenski, Brock Faber, Noah Hanifin, Charlie McAvoy. Quinn Hughes, Jacob Slavin and Jake Sanderson.
The United States made its presence known last year at the Four Nations Showdown when a bitter rivalry with Canada ignited. The team will begin pool play on February 12 against Latvia and may not face Canada until the knockout stage.
