Military courts have sentenced 25 civilians to prison terms of between two and 10 years for their role in violent attacks on military installations during nationwide unrest in May 2023, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Saturday.

The convicts were involved in attacks on key military sites including Jinnah House, General Headquarters (GHQ) and Pakistan Air Force Base in Mianwali.

According to the ISPR, the General Field Martial Court has convicted 25 people in the first phase, after a thorough review of the evidence and completion of appropriate legal procedures.

Fourteen people received sentences of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, while the others received shorter sentences, the statement said.

The ISPR emphasized the seriousness of the attacks, describing them as “flagrant acts of violence” that shocked the nation. The statement also highlighted the importance of addressing such actions, calling them an “unacceptable attempt at political terrorism to impose [a] will perverted through violence and coercion.”

Most of those convicted were found guilty of participating in the Jinnah House attack, while others were implicated in attacks on military installations across the country. The military condemned May 9 as a “Black Day” and claimed that the unrest was politically orchestrated and targeted the Armed Forces, including acts of desecration of memorials dedicated to martyrs.

On December 13, 2024, a seven-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered the decision of pending cases that had been delayed due to previous rulings.
