LAHORE:
In addition to soaking the roofs, the streets and alleys, the rain serves the crucial purpose of feeding the dry layers of the earth under the ground. Unfortunately, however, in a big city like Lahore, millions of gallons of valuable rainwater are wasted every year, due to the absence of adequate storage facilities.
Every day, Lahore extracts 70 to 80 million gallons of groundwater. Wasa operates 600 tubes in the city, while thousands are more directed by private entities. Although WASA has launched a groundwater storage tank project aimed at conserving rainwater and helping to restore underground water levels, experts believe that efforts are disproportionate given the speed at which groundwater levels are lowering throughout the city.
According to Dr. Muhammad Yasin, an expert in water resources at the Mountain Research Center integrated at the University of Punjab, the underground level of water in Lahore is falling from one and a half meters every year. “If we extract a cube of soil water, we should also return a cube. Our university has built recharge wells in several places. Previously, rainwater would accumulate for hours in different fields, but now, thanks to these recharge wells, it is perceived in the field,” said Dr. Yasin, who turned out that other experts are the opinions of other experts that are approaching through a beautiful of the waters.
“A recharge well is a simple but effective technique that filters rainwater through layers of stone, coal and sand before directing it to the ground. If rainwater is properly handled, not only urban flood Lahore, including the University of Punjab.
Speaking to The Express PAkGazette on the matter, the managing director of Wasa, Ghufran Ahmed, said that three tanks had already been completed in Lawrence Road, Cashmiro Road and Sheranwala Gate, with a combined storage capacity of 4.4 million gallons.
“The construction is ongoing in ten more underground tanks throughout the city, and the largest was built at the Gaddafi stadium with a capacity of 4 million gallons. Other tanks under construction include those of Kareem Park (1.8 million gallons), Tajpura B Block (3.2 million gallons), Garden Town, Cooper, Rasool Park, Tikka Chowk, Railway Station, Waris Road and Breati, these Willing.
