Minister of Energy Awais Ahmed Leghari met with US Ambassador to Pakistan Natalie Baker to discuss ongoing reforms in Pakistan’s energy sector and explore potential investment opportunities.
During the meeting, Leghari sought Ambassador Baker’s support to engage US-based multilateral development partners and international financial institutions, including the IMF and World Bank. He sought their help in removing obstacles to sustainable growth of Pakistan’s energy sector, particularly to facilitate structural reforms and improve sectoral performance.
Leghari also briefed the Ambassador on the recently launched surplus power package, designed to offer competitively priced electricity to industrial consumers. He urged the United States to support expanding this package to entirely new industries, which would spur greater investment and industrial growth.
The discussion also focused on efforts to address inefficiencies in the power distribution system, with special attention to reducing technical and commercial losses and improving recoveries. Ambassador Baker expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Energy’s ongoing reforms and praised the government’s progress in managing circular debt through targeted data-driven interventions.
Both sides explored investment opportunities for American investors, particularly in Pakistan’s power transmission sector. Ambassador Baker expressed great interest in these opportunities.
Leghari sought the support of the US ambassador to encourage US investors to consider acquiring DISCO to further improve operational efficiency and service delivery.
