The San Francisco Giants are off to a rough start in 2026 and frustrations seemed to boil over Wednesday when they lost to the San Diego Padres.
Giants third baseman Matt Chapman made a quick play on a helicopter from Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts in the bottom of the fifth inning. He had to make a quick, off-balance throw to first baseman Casey Schmitt in an attempt to catch the speedy hitter.

Chapman’s shot seemed a little high, but catchable as it came off Schmitt’s glove and behind him. He allowed a runner on third base to score as the Padres extended their lead to 2-0.
Then the team gathered on the mound to try to calm down. Chapman appeared to tell Schmitt, “Catch the damn ball,” as the players stood on the mound.
Both Schmitt and Chapman were blamed for errors during the game. Chapman made a one-on-one play in the third inning when he threw out Fernando Tatis Jr. trying to score from third base on a groundout.
San Diego ultimately earned a 7-1 victory, dropping San Francisco to 2-4 on the year.

Chapman and Schmitt seemed to clear things up after the game, according to NBC Bay Area.
“We’re all brothers here. It’s the heat of the moment,” Chapman told reporters. “I already talked to Casey and everything is fine. I figured people would try to make a big deal out of it, but it’s baseball and things happen. We all learn from it. We’ll move on. I already told him it was the heat of the moment. I just wanted to get those outs. It happens.”
Schmitt said he wasn’t “mad about it” and understood that everyone on the team has the same goal: to win games.

“That’s my boy,” he added. “He’s always been in my corner and helped me with everything. He is what he is and he should have caught the ball. We’re good. We’re men here and we’re trying to win games.”
Chapman was 0-for-4 at the plate and Schmitt was 0-for-3.
