Monarch: Legacy of MonstersThe return date was confirmed alongside the release of the season 2 trailer, which you can watch above. And while it only gives us a brief glimpse of what’s to come in the upcoming 10-part installment of the Apple TV Original, it confirms the return of characters we didn’t expect to see in the show’s next entry and the possible absence of a key player from its debut season.
According to a press release from Apple TV, Season 2 “will begin with the fate of Monarch—and the world—at stake.
“The dramatic saga reveals buried secrets that bring our heroes (and villains) together on Kong’s Skull Island, and a mysterious new village where a mythical Titan rises from the sea. The effects of the past cause ripples in the present, blurring the bonds between family, friends and enemies, all with the threat of a titanic event on the horizon.”
Why doesn’t Godzilla appear in the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 trailer?
Full spoilers follow Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 and Legendary’s Monster-Verse.
The first trailer for Season 2 may only be 50 seconds long, but it answers a big question I had after last season’s finale and leaves me with another one that needs answering.
Let’s start with the first thing. Lee Shaw, played by father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell in season 1, was thought to have died during the finale.
In fact, the older version of Shaw played by Kurt Russell apparently sacrificed himself in episode 10 of the first season of one of Apple TV’s best shows. However, the season 2 trailer shows that not only is he still alive, but he also appears to leave the Hollow Earth and return to the surface world.
Since Wyatt Russell is back for this season, it’s all but confirmed that we’ll get more flashbacks of a younger Shaw working alongside Bill Randa. That’s the character played by Anders Holm, who is among other cast members returning from season 1, including Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto and Joe Tippett.
Curiously, however, the first teaser for season 2 does not reveal whether Godzilla will be part of the process.
in our Monarch: Legacy of Monsters In the season 2 guide, I talked about the possibility that the so-called King of the Monsters will not be an active participant this season. In fact, since it primarily takes place on Skull Island, i.e. Kong’s home, Godzilla may only have a minor supporting role this time around.
That being said, the legendary kaiju may not appear at all.
Based on how last season ended, Monarch Season 2 will take place in 2017. At this point in the Monster-Verse timeline, Godzilla and Kong had not crossed paths and would not do so until 2021. Godzilla vs. Kong. Yeah Monarch Season 2 focuses on Kong and his base of operations, it wouldn’t make sense for Godzilla to appear.
Still, considering season 2’s Big Bad will apparently be a “mythical Titan” who “rises from the sea,” maybe Godzilla will show up. Humanity could certainly use an expert swimmer to help them defeat a fellow water-loving kaiju!
