Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke with his Pakistani counterpart on Sunday and offered Russia’s help to resolve tensions between Pakistan and India about Cashmiro, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
“Special attention was paid to the significant increase in the tension between New Delhi and Islamabad,” said the ministry in a statement, referring to the conversation of Lavrov with the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ishaq Dar.
“It was emphasized that Russia is ready to act for a political settlement of the situation resulting from the act of terrorism of April 22 in the Pahalgam area of the Kashmir Valley, in case of a mutual desire by Islamabad and New Delhi,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement published on telegram.
The conversation of Lavrov with Dar took place two days after talking with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and also requested a difference agreement between the two neighboring countries.
The alleged militants killed at least 26 people in the attack last week against a tourist mountain destination in the Pahalgam area of the Jammu and Kashmir Valley.
The Muslim majority region has been the focus of several wars, an insurgency and diplomatic confrontations.
Russia has been the largest arms supplier in India for decades and New Delhi and Moscow have had close ties since the Soviet era.
