The Central Committee of Ruet-E-Hilal announced on Thursday the sighting of the moon Muharram-uham for the Islamic year 1447 AH, which marks the beginning of the new lunar year as of Friday, June 27. Consequently, Ashura, Muharram’s tenth, will be observed on Sunday, July 6.
The announcement was made by the president of the Committee, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, after a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Quetta. The officials of the Department of Meteorology of Pakistan and the National Space Agency, Supparco, also attended.
The meetings of the Zonal and District Moon Committee were held simultaneously at its respective headquarters, with the Zonal Committee of Islamabad convening in the Secretariat of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

When heading to a press conference after the meeting, Maulana Azad confirmed the new moon sighting. “The moon of Muharram-uham has been seen. On Friday, June 27, Muharram will mark the first day, while Muharram will fall on Saturday, July 5, and Ashura, Muharram’s tenth, will be observed on Sunday, July 6,” he said.
Early in the day, the Department of Meteorology had noticed that the dusty conditions in Quetta could reduce the visibility possibilities of the moon. He had projected that the moon would be visible between 8:10 pm and 9:00 pm, with an expected age of 28 hours and 38 minutes.
The National Space Agency of Pakistan, Supparco, had also published a forecast on the lunar month. He declared that the birth of the moon Muharram was expected on June 25 at 3:32 pm, and at sunset on June 26, the age of the moon would be approximately 28 hours and 15 minutes.
The agency said that the country’s coastal areas would have a 75 -minute gap between sun and lunar, the conditions considered very favorable to observe the new crescent.
