Na opposition leader Protest ‘censorship’

Islamabad:

The opposition leader, Omar Ayub Khan, formally wrote a letter to the president of the National Assembly on Tuesday, expressing concerns about what he described as a growing censorship of parliamentary discourses and an alleged violation of constitutional and procedural norms.

In the three -page letter, Na’s opposition leader reminded the president of Na Ayaz Sadiq of his constitutional role as custodian, not the teacher, of the Chamber. The letter underlines the repeated cases in which, according to Ayub, the speeches of the opposition members were censored or cut and altered when official images were requested, which raises concerns about transparency and equity.

“Since the beginning of the current assembly in 2024, opposition members have faced increasing censorship not only through restricted means coverage but also through the edition and significant alteration of our registered speeches,” he wrote. “When I and other members request access to official images of our speeches, we find them substantially cut and manipulated.”

“I must also remind you that, according to law and tradition, the speaker is custodian, not the camera teacher,” said Ayub, “the custodian of this August institution cannot arbitrarily distort or arbitrarily distort the voice of the representatives of the peoples.”

The opposition leader emphasized that the members of the National Assembly have constitutional right to express their views freely.
