ISLAMABAD:
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) recovered a record Rs 11.5 trillion in just three years, the country’s top anti-graft body told the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice in its comprehensive report on recoveries and reforms on Wednesday.
According to the report, NAB saved Rs 11 trillion by reclaiming 4.85 million acres of government land. It also returned Rs 213 billion to 129,000 victims of housing society frauds, while freezing assets worth Rs 85.4 billion in anti-money laundering operations.
“For every rupee spent at the institution, Rs 629 has been recovered,” the report states. He noted that restrictions preventing NAB from pursuing corruption cases below Rs 500 million remain a major obstacle to accountability.
He highlighted that currently only 16 of 23 accountability courts are active nationwide, with the rest closed. On average, it takes a court six years to decide a referral. In 2025, 58% of NAB cases ended in conviction, while 42% of defendants were acquitted.
The NAB said it returned Rs 660 million to the budget by eliminating 238 posts.
