Naqvi briefs PM on deal on work permits, visa exemptions for Pakistanis after European talks

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was on Sunday briefed by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on the outcomes of his recent participation in two high-level multilateral meetings held in Europe.

Naqvi informed Shehbaz of his attendance at a meeting of interior ministers of four countries in Rome, Italy, which brought together his counterparts from Pakistan, Italy, Spain and Greece. He also briefed the prime minister about a separate six-nation meeting held in Poland, which was attended by the interior ministers of Pakistan, Poland, Latvia, Finland, Estonia and Lithuania.

Both conferences resulted in an agreement between the participating nations to expedite the issuance of legal work permits to Pakistani citizens, Naqvi told the prime minister.

In addition, he conveyed Member States’ appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts to reduce the number of people traveling illegally to European countries (a figure that fell by 47% in a single year), as well as the measures taken to combat human trafficking.

On the bilateral front, Poland and Italy will soon abolish visa requirements for Pakistani diplomatic and official passport holders, Naqvi informed Shehbaz. He also noted that a comprehensive plan to further strengthen Pakistan’s immigration and border security capacity will be presented to the European Union as soon as possible.

Shehbaz praised the home minister for his efforts. The meeting also addressed the country’s internal situation and the general security outlook.
