The Nascar Xfinity series driver, Austin Hill, caused a massive accident in Watkins Glen International on Saturday afternoon and took the heat of others for him.

The incident came with nine laps to go in the race. Hill, Michael McDowell, Zane Smith and Sam Mayer were among those who chase the leader Connor Zilisch. Hill and the rest of the pack left curve 5 when he got into the back of McDowell.

The accident involved multiple drivers when Hill assumed the fault of reaching the back of McDowell.

“Only two guys do it. Nothing malicious, no matter how much they want to sit there and try to do it more than it is,” said Hill, through Frontstretch. “There were only two boys running. I was trying to get the 88 (Connor Zilisch) as quickly as I could because 88 moved away from us, and I thought we might have a chance to run with him and run for the victory there. I had a massive race of the carousel.

“I thought I was trying to catch (McDowell) off and get to his left side.”

McDowell said Hill was hitting him during the last two laps before the accident.

“I turned around.” I surrounded it cleanly in those rebootes, and there in the end, as I said, I will have to have a better view of that. But for me, he wasn’t next to me. I only got to my rear bumper, it turned to me on the side.

“I am not talking about getting hooked intentionally. He does not need a penalty for that. Only, there was no way to end the pass there, and he simply made the decision not to get up and take a turn, but that is not the same as a right -wing hook in an oval. That is not what I am saying, so I don’t want him to communicate.

It is not clear if there will be more discipline for Hill. Nascar suspended him for a race for causing an accident in Iowa a few weeks ago.
