Just in the signal, NBN CO has confirmed that wholesale price increases will take effect in the change of financial year in July, which, in turn, will affect many of the best NBN plans.
The news is not a surprise too much, since the largest broadband supplier in the country not only increased wholesale prices this time last year, but previously published a regulatory framework of special access tasks (SAU) in 2023 that established the expected price increases over the coming years.
There is no important reason to panic, since there are some slightly Good news to take the last ad. This year’s increase in wholesale cost for the best NBN suppliers is less than last year, less than au $ 2 per month compared to AU $ 3 to Au $ 5 in 2024.
After those increases, we saw the cost of the slower NBN plans, NBN 25 and NBN 50, increase up to Au $ 5 per month. On the contrary, and perhaps surprisingly, the retail cost of faster NBN plans remained as they were or really decreased.
What to expect this year
So what does that mean for this last round of wholesale prices increases? The quick response is: we do not really know that Internet service providers are free to adjust their plans as better. We could see a similar response to what we did last year, so the slower NBN plans can become more expensive, while the prices of faster NBN plans could become even more affordable.
We have previously discussed how Gigabit NBN plans are becoming cheaper and faster than ever. Will they get even cheaper? Only time will say it.
How much are the NBN plans going up?
The wholesale cost of all NBN plans, from the slow NBN 25 to the faster NBN 1000 is ready to see an increase. Depending on speed, wholesale plan prices are increasing between Au $ 0.66 to Au $ 1.71
Price increase? Maybe. Increase in speed? Definitely.
A reason why NBN plans can Becoming more expensive is because NBN CO has previously confirmed that NBN 2000 plans will arrive in September. We still do not know how much they will cost, but it is confirmed that considering the wholesale price of the ISP is au $ 115 per month, do not expect them to be cheap.
However, together with its arrival, the best NBN 100 plans, the best NBN 250 plans and the best NBN 1000 plans are ready to obtain a speed impulse. However, this is only for customers who connect to the fixed line NBN network through coaxial hybrid fiber (HFC) or fiber to facilities (FTTP).
It has been suggested that NBN plan prices should not increase together with these speed gains, but again, ISPs can do what they want. The very fact that speed increases will not apply to all could help the case of prices remain fixed.
If you live in a home that connects through the fiber to the node (FTTN) or the fiber to the sidewalk (FTTC), then it is likely to be eligible for the free fiber update program of NBN CO, which will update your equipment to FTTP, necessary to take advantage of faster download speeds.
What to do now
The best way to overcome the price increase, at least temporarily, is to change its NBN plan to a new supplier before July. Most NBN suppliers offer six -month introductory discounts and if you register in a new plan just before the increase in prices, this promotion will be honored by duration.
The continuous cost can be susceptible to any potential increase, but, as mentioned above, if it has an HFC or FTTP connection, it will also be established for a speed impulse for when its six -month discount expires. The warning here is whether you get a NBN 100 or faster plan. You can read more about the increase in speed that you can expect in our Guide to the NBN 2000 plans.
If you are considering changing, these are our current recommendations at different levels of NBN speed:
A key thing to consider here is that our recommendations of the Plan NBN 250 and NBN 1000 have eliminated introductory discounts and, instead, opted for a fixed rate. We will be particularly the particular plans in particular the new financial year to see if any change comes into force.
