ISLAMABAD:
The National Dialogue Committee (NDC) on Saturday expressed “serious concern” over the health of PTI founder Imran Khan and called for the immediate formation of an independent medical board to assess the former prime minister’s condition and arranging a meeting with his personal doctor.
The move comes two days after the government confirmed that Imran had undergone a medical procedure.
The NDC meeting was held in Islamabad with Fawad Chaudhry, Imran Ismail, Mahmood Maulvi, lawyer Mohammad Ali Saif, former minister Mohammad Ali Durrani, former Karachi mayor Waseem Akhter and veteran politician Munir Ahmad Khan as participants.
In a joint statement, the group demanded immediate formation of an independent medical board and added that a meeting be arranged between Imran and his personal doctor Dr Faisal Sultan.
He also called for facilitating meetings between the PTI founder and his family, including his children, saying this would ease public and family anxiety and help counter what he described as growing international criticism of Pakistan over fundamental human, legal and democratic rights.
NDC leaders strongly condemned the attitude of the current regime and stated that the approach of the federal and Punjab governments towards the treatment of Imran is regrettable and undemocratic.
“The ruling coalition of the PML-N and the PPP has always preached against the politicization of health issues, however, their actions against Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, Dr Yasmin Rashid and other political prisoners, based on the political opposition, clearly violate their own past statements, assertions and advice,” the statement said.
