- Young said he hopes his offer will “relieve some of the stress and unwarranted threats” the islanders have faced amid President Trump’s attempt to seize Danish territory.
- He also doubled down on his anti-Jeff Bezos stance and shared that he has deleted all of his music from Amazon.
Rock legend Neil Young has attacked Donald Trump by offering his entire digital catalog to Greenland residents for free, following the US president’s attempt to take control of the Danish territory.
The singer-songwriter uploaded one of many posts to his site sharing that Greenland residents can now sign up for a year’s free access to his music through the Neil Young Archives website, which would normally cost between $24.99 and $99.99 a year according to Rolling Stone.
In addition to the registration link, Young announced his solidarity with the people of Greenland in a lengthy statement, saying, “I hope that my music and musical films will relieve some of the stress and unwarranted threats they are experiencing from our unpopular and hopefully temporary government.”
He added: “It is my sincerest wish that you can enjoy all my music in your beautiful home in Greenland, in its highest quality. This is an offer of peace and love. All the music I made over the last 62 years is yours to listen to.”
In a separate post he shared on his web archive, Young took aim at Amazon founder Jeff Bezos after promising last year to remove all traces of his music from the company’s store and streaming service.
It seems that Young is still very dedicated to his promise, stating that “my music will never be available on Amazon, as long as it is owned by Bezos,” whom he considered a “billionaire patron of the president.” That’s just the surface, and Young went deeper:
“The president’s international policies and his support for ICE [US Immigration and Customs Enforcement] make it impossible for me to ignore their actions. If you feel the same as me, I strongly recommend that you do not use Amazon,” he said.
“There are many ways to avoid Amazon and support individual Americans and American companies that supply the same products. I’ve done that with my music and people who are looking can find it in many other places.”
He said goodbye acknowledging that although “[my] Unfortunately this position is detrimental to my record company in the short term,” he firmly believes that “the message [I’m] shipping is important and clear.” Young then thanked his fans for continuing to support him and for purchasing music locally and on independent digital services.
