- Netflix now costs a little more.
- The streaming service has announced price increases for all three of its plans.
- Their cheapest plan now starts at $7.99 per month and tops out at $24.99 in the US.
We must be experiencing deja vu as Netflix just raised their prices again, although it could be that we also recently streamed Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts tour documentary on the streaming service. As announced in Netflix’s latest letter to shareholders, price increases are coming for the streaming service’s three main plans.
The streaming service writes: “As we continue to invest in programming and provide more value to our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so we can reinvest and make Netflix even better.” It has become a trend with Netflix, and other streaming services included, to increase prices, and the latest increases are not earth-shattering, but they can be substantial over time.
In the US, the ‘ad-supported standard’ plan has gone up $1 from $6.99 to $7.99 per month, the ‘ad-free standard’ jumps to $17.99 from $15.49, and the ‘premium’ is now $24. 99 per month from $22.99. These price increases take effect immediately, with similar increases also in Canada, Portugal and Argentina.
Netflix writes that the price increases are so it can continue investing more in programming and offer more value to its subscribers. The latter is a number that continues to grow: Netflix added 18.9 million new subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2024, for a total of 302 million paid subscribers worldwide.
Impressive, to say the least, and while it’s not new content, The edge reports that the streamer is also rolling out a new plan called Additional Member with Ads Plan that will allow you to add a member who lives at a different address to the plan. No pricing has been shared for this plan as of yet, but it’s worth noting that it currently costs $7.99 to add to an existing plan.
These new prices for standard with or without advertising and premium take effect immediately, and if you’re already a subscriber, you’ll see the increase on your next bill. We don’t yet know if the price increase will also apply to other regions like the UK or Australia, but we’ll be sure to report back as soon as we have more news.
