- Apple TV app on Android now supports Google Cast
- Netflix removed this functionality a few weeks ago
- It’s an easy way to send content to eligible large screens.
With successes like Pluribus, Rupture, Ted Lassoand ContractionApple TV is one of the best streaming services out there and it is also releasing some great news for its Android users in the middle of the holiday season.
Apple TV launched on Android in February 2025, and while it lacked support for Google Cast at launch, the latest update, rolling out now, not only fixes that but could also encourage some Netflix users to join the platform. On Android, you can now easily cast the show or movie you’re watching to the big screen on TVs that support Google Cast.
It’s as simple as touching the Google Cast icon on the screen and selecting the television or screen you want to send it to. You then connect and start playback, but the controls remain on your Android device within the Apple TV app.
Pretty simple, and not only is it a great way to get content easily on the big screen at home, but also for hotels with compatible TVs and Airbnb rentals. You can easily watch something on TV without the hassle of logging into a service on a screen that’s not yours permanently.
Apple’s decision to implement this now not only adds a feature that’s been missing since Apple TV debuted on Android, but it also comes just weeks after Netflix removed much of the functionality from its app, a move that hasn’t been universally loved by consumers and subscribers.
I don’t know if we’ll see Netflix add the feature back, considering the removal was done quietly, but Apple TV getting Cast support is a good mark in its favor. It’s included in version 2.2 of the Apple TV app, and after a quick update, you’ll see the Google Cast icon appear during playback.
Apple isn’t adding Google Cast to the iOS app yet, but Apple TV on that platform has long supported AirPlay, which is another easy way to get content on the big screen with compatible TVs or displays.
All in all, it’s a nice (and thankfully timely) update from Apple to the Apple TV app on Android. Let us know in the comments if you plan to try this feature this holiday season and what you wanted to see on Apple TV.
