- Netflix support for first -generation Fire TV ends in June
- Older fire television devices cannot play more modern video codecs
- Try Amazon exchange to get money from a newer model
After a decade, Netflix is finishing support for first -generation TV Fire transmission devices. As of June 3, 2025, the first generation versions of the following models will no longer compatible with Netflix:
- Fire TV (2014)
- Fire TV Stick (2014)
- Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote (2016)
The announcement, on which Netflix has sent an email to its customers, is not a big surprise: Amazon has not updated them for some time, and the first Fire TV devices do not support the most modern audio and video formats.
Even in 2023, some users at the Firetv Subnet were advising not to buy new ones.
Why does Netflix stop the support for Fire TV models?
Netflix has not said specifically, but the most likely explanation is that the devices do not admit the audio and video codecs that Netflix is using. As PC World, whose title PC-Welt sister gave the news, reported: “It could have something to do with Netflix using newer standards, such as the AV1 codec, to transmit with a better image quality, particularly for customers who are in the Premium Plan.” Now discontinuous devices cannot be updated to admit newly codecs.
If you are the owner of one of the affected models and want to continue transmitting Netflix, you must buy one of the current rank. And as always with Amazon devices, try not to pay the full price: Amazon discounts its Fire TV devices constantly throughout the year, and I would not be surprised if the retailer reacts to Netflix news to the discount accordingly. At the time of writing, my favorite update is 33% discount in the United States between the offers of the Fallen Day.
If I were updating since an old TV Fire device, I would jump on 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K and would choose Fire TV Stick 4K Max. There is no big price difference: the non-Max version has an official price of $ 49.99 / £ 59.99 / AU $ 79, while the maximum is $ 59.99 / £ 69.99 / AU $ 119. For a little more, you get more storage, a faster processor, a better environmental experience of Wi-Fi and Amazon.
In the United States, that model was reduced to $ 39.99 four times this year, included today, May 21. For customers from the United Kingdom, Max has been discarded at £ 50 or less three times this year so far.
