‘New provinces necessary for future generations’

Islamabad:

The president of Punjab Group of Colleges, Mian Amer Mahmood, has asked for the creation of a new province at each division level, arguing that the smallest administrative units would guarantee better governance and development results.

Speaking in a seminar entitled Pakistan 2030: possibilities and new addresses at the University of Fast, Mahmood questioned why, despite heavy spending, Punjab could not deliver the expected results in education and medical care. He pointed out that the provincial government spends RS4,400 per student in public schools every month and almost RS6 million annually in each hospital bed, but the results remain unsatisfactory.

“Modern research shows that the smaller the administrative units, the better the performance will be,” he said, adding that Pakistan continues to function with administrative structures designed for the population of 1947. “If we want to ensure the future of our generations, each division must become a province.”

He urged young people to channel their energy in this cause instead of “wasting time on social networks,” saying that such movement could unite all political parties. He stressed that universities should not only produce human resources but also focus on human development.
