NFL Draft: Boise State coach excites the best prospect Ashton Jeanty

The main prospect of NFL Ashton Jeacty Draft had one of the most dominant seasons in the history of university football for Boise State last season.

The 21 -year -old runner ran for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns, averaged an amazing seven yards for attempt, and finished his season with the second majority of the yards in a single season in the history of university football. Only Barry Sanders had more yards in a single season.

Jeanty runner coach James Montgomery, recently spoke with Pak Gazette Digital to discuss the player’s historical season.

As he broke into the national scene and was recorded in record books in 2024 during his Junior season, Jeanty saw a similar success as a second year student.

However, Montgomery said the plan in Jeanty’s second year was that he was going to be part of a “two -headed monster.”

“It was a little crazy because when I entered the ’23 season I thought it was going to be a two -headed monster, but George (Holani) ended up injured in the second play against UW. I knew that Ash was ready to assume that number 1 role in the field and, I mean, we really didn’t have an option,” said Montgomery with a smile.

Jeanty ran for 1,347 yards with 14 touchdowns by land while averaging a brilliant 6.1 yards for attempt while caughting 43 passes for 569 yards with five Touchdowns receiving in his second season.

Although Jeanty assumed the main role, Holani was also productive. He ran for 748 yards and seven touchdowns. After that season, Holani signed with the Seattle Seahawks, and is currently in his practice team.

With Holani in the NFL, it depended on Jeanty to build on his strong second year season and carry the load.

Montgomery saw the beginnings of a special year student in the spring ball.

“The type of ‘bulb moment’ we were running a duo in the spring ball last year and I saw the way he pressed the hole, and the movements he did. Because I say a little, when we are running duo, we have no jump,” said Montgomery.

“And I always say that you fall from the table, and you find the channel because you read the first sponsor on the game side. And he fell from the table, he found the ramp, then reached the free hat, you made him get lost and looked at me with a big smile and knew exactly, yes, the bulb is really lit.” Montgomery said with a smile.

Montgomery said that during the spring, he and Jeanty retreated the layers, and went from football 101, 201 and 301, which allowed them to talk about the game at a higher level.

Jeanty continued to train as hard as ever and improved his mental understanding of the game. Montgomery said Jeanty called her “dark mode.”

“He really didn’t do much in spring and summer entering that season, but we only work. We have one of the toughest training in the country. We run the upper covers and ran every cover last summer with a weight vest, so it was a little crazy to see him do it, and never lost a representative,” said Montgomery.

“If you saw it in practice, he is the first in the row for each exercise we do, whether offensive or special equipment, and then only the amount of effort he brought every day. He was a little crazy because he did not take too much live action on the spring ball, so in the autumn camp we probably try to get a couple to take it, and he came out like a crazy man in the autumn camp I will need to need it, “we need it.”

And Montgomery was right. Jeanty didn’t need it.

In the Boise State opening game last season against Georgia Southern, Jeanty had 20 haunts for 267 yards and six touchdowns, placing statistics that can be found in a video game in his 56-45 victory.

Montgomery knew just after that performance that Jeanty had the opportunity to do something special.

“When you started week 1 with 267 (yards), I knew we had the opportunity to do something really special. And even for me, I had to block the exterior noise. I couldn’t be on Twitter, it couldn’t be, ‘Yes, we are so sweet’ because I knew we only wanted to continue improving,” said Montgomery.

“Initially, two thousand yards was our goal, and once we began to overcome that and get closer to that, we just wanted to continue pressing. Remember that sometimes I would have in the game,” we have not finished, move on “because I had a coach in the past, because it always gave me a little more than a little more than a little more. Games, ‘Hey, brother, we have to move on, it is not over'”.

That approach worked well for Jeanty and the Broncos of the state of Boise.

With Jeantty leading the road offensively, the Broncos were 12-2 and won the Mountain West conference. The Broncos were the seed number 3 at the University Soccer playoff and arrived at the Bowl party, where they were defeated by Penn State 31-14.

Jeanty’s incredible season almost gave him the Heisman trophy. Travis Hunter de Colorado had 552 votes in the first place, surpassing Jeanty’s 309, which makes him the closest vote since 2009.

Montgomery will not say if Jeanty should have won the Heisman.

“I want to say that I really do not comment too much, because I have a strong bias when it comes to that,” said Montgomery with a smile.

“I came to work with him every day, and I know how good person he is, and I know what he could do for our program and how he raised us to get where we were at the end of this year and I know how hard he worked and how he fought against injuries and how he took care of his body during the day, the day, how a 3.0 student was able to do.

Heisman’s conversation between Jeanty and Hunter radiated throughout the season, and was very discussed until the moment it was announced.

Montgomery said the corridor style with which Jeanty runs, and made him so successful, reminds him of a legend of Philadelphia Eagles.

“I think Brian Westbrook in the past,” said Montgomery. “But I think it is a mixture of many boys. If he had 5’10 215 (pounds), I would say that of Tomlinson de Ladainian) too, you know what I mean, so I think it is a mixture of many types. The rest is the way it can make boys lose, and their contact balance is special.”

As for whether he wants Jeanty to land with a certain team or style of play in the NFL draft, Montgomery hopes that whatever the team that selects it will prosper.

“As a coach and as his coach, obviously you want them to be high, but the other piece is that you want me to go to a situation that has a line or very good (offensive line). So you want me to go to 10, but maybe if it was 18, it could reach a better line or, there is that good balance,” said Montgomery.

“I mean any scheme, we execute a rather pro offensive in the style here, and we execute all the schemes that you can execute: internal zone, exterior zone, duo, power, accountant, crack, as if we execute all the schemes. He understands how to establish all those, and he knows all the blocking schemes when it comes to all those things. I do not know if there is a specific situation, I hope I go to a really good line.

With Jeanty passing towards the NFL, he leaves a great hole in the offensive and the Boise State team. Montgomery knows that you don’t have to replace it.

“I was the leader of my room and was the captain of my team and will fall as one of the greats of all time here. He is not trying to replace him, he is trying to make sure to build the best room I can.

“It is not really a pressure for them because that is their older brother, they want to be like him, and they want to get their shots and go out and keep the tradition alive. Definitely, we have some big shoes to fill, but I do not think we are going to replicate anything because they are all different, and obviously it is a special talent.”

Montgomery will not only miss the player, but the person who is a large part as well.

“He is an incredible child lover of fun, but the things I am going to miss is his ability to have fun. As if he will dance before a click in practice because you had music and all that, and then only to see two seconds before the click is blocked and simply go,” said Montgomery.

Montgomery and the rest of the football will discover which team selects the “special talent” which is just on Thursday, April 24, when the first round of the NFL draft will take place in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
