Patrick Mahomes suffered a devastating knee injury that ended his 2025 season and completely crushed the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff hopes.

Mahomes suffered the injury on December 14, 2025, in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers. A torn ACL typically takes about nine months for most athletes to recover and return to their sport. I would peg Mahomes’ return around Week 1 of the 2026 season.

While his status for the start of the 2026 regular season is still up in the air, the star quarterback posted a video that would get any NFL fan excited for his return to the field.

“QB1 back in the lab,” the Chiefs wrote in X.

The video showed Mahomes backing up and throwing a football. He was seen wearing a black compression sleeve on his leg. It was only a six-second clip, but he seemed to be making good progress in his rehabilitation process.

Mahomes addressed his status in January after the season ended.

“First of all, rehab is going great so far. I’ve been doing all the checkpoints the doctor wants you to do and regaining strength and range of motion,” Mahomes said. “So, that’s been going very well. I’ve been doing all of this here in Kansas City so far. (Assistant athletic trainer) Julie (Frymyer) has been crushing me, pushing me. The doctor gives you goals to reach, and I just try to maximize them, and they hold me back because I always want to go a little further. It’s gone very well.

“I think long term I want to be ready for Week 1. The doctor says I might be, but I can’t predict what’s going to happen throughout the whole process, but that’s my goal, so I’ll try to prepare myself to be ready to play in that Week 1 and not have any restrictions. You want to be healthy and give us the best chance to win. Obviously, I hope I can do some things in the OTAs and get to training camp and hopefully be able to do a lot there. I’m excited for the process. It’s a long process, but I’m excited for it. it.”
