Tua Tagovailoa apologized Wednesday for criticizing his teammates after the Miami Dolphins’ loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Tagovailoa initially said he was “shocked” by the recent losses and was asked how the team will avoid trying to adopt a “woe is me” attitude during the upcoming games. He suggested that other team members should start pulling out all the stops and doing the little things.
“Well, I think it starts with leadership to help articulate that for the guys, and then what we expect from them,” he said. “We expect this. Are we getting it? Are we not getting it?”

“We have guys that show up late to player-only meetings. We have guys that don’t show up to player-only meetings. There’s a lot of things that go into that. Do we have to make it mandatory? Don’t we have to make it mandatory? So there’s a lot of things of that nature that we have to clean up. It starts with the little things like that.”
But on Wednesday, Tagovailoa told reporters that he “made a mistake” by not “protecting the team.”
“I made a mistake and I admit it right now. I talked to the guys on the team about it, I talked to the leaders about it,” Tagoavailoa said. “They know in my heart that the intention was correct. But no matter the intention, the intention can be correct, but when things are misinterpreted or how the media wants to portray them, that leaves a void of silence and many questions for the guys on our team.

“Now, at 1-5, we talk a lot about ‘We’ve got to get this going, we’ve got to get this going,’ we come in excited to go to work, we forget about the noise, and I feel like I just added that for our guys. For myself, I have to look at myself as a leader who protects the team. I don’t feel like I did that to the best of my ability. I felt like I let the emotions of the game get to me after the game, and that’s something I took back from. I can learn. as leader of this team. What happens internally should be protected and none of it should have come to light. So I want to publicly apologize for that, I want to move on and focus on [our next opponent in] the Cleveland Browns.”

Tagovailoa was 21 of 32 with 205 passing yards, a go-ahead touchdown pass Darren Waller and three interceptions against the Chargers. Their only victory was against the winless New York Jets.
