The NFL is investigating how the Baltimore Ravens handled the injury designation of superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson before Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.
Jackson, who has been battling a hamstring injury, was expected to return to the Ravens’ offense this week following his bye. However, the two-time league MVP was ruled out against the Bears before Sunday’s 1 p.m. kickoff. He participated fully in practice on Friday, indicating he would play on Sunday. But Saturday was ruled out.
The Ravens could be subject to league discipline if they are found to have violated the league’s injury reporting policy.

“The league will investigate this,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told ESPN on Saturday. “The league reviews any matter that involves a change in a player’s status.”
The Ravens issued their own statement on the matter, saying they contacted the league office before making the decision about Jackson.

“Upon further evaluation today and after consultation with the league office, because Lamar did not take any initial reps in practice, we updated our report to reflect his participation in practice,” the statement read.
ESPN added that while Jackson was considered a full participant on Friday, he ran with the scout team while Tyler “Snoop” Huntley ran with the starting offense.
Huntley was scheduled to start Sunday in place of Cooper Rush, who has been the Ravens’ starter since Jackson went down. However, he was benched during the loss to the Los Angeles Rams before Huntley’s bye week as he struggled to get the offense going.

Jackson’s injury remains an issue couldn’t come at a worse time for the Ravens, as they are 1-5 in what has been one of the most shocking developments for a Super Bowl contender this season.
It’s no secret how much of a miss Jackson is because of his playmaking abilities. Safety Kyle Hamilton recently gave Pak Gazette Digital an optimistic outlook for the Ravens, who need to put together a winning streak if they want to make the playoffs. But he knows how much Jackson influences those hopes.
“Lamar is our quarterback, and he’s the guy who puts cigarette butts in stadium seats, sells tickets and wins games for us,” Hamilton said. “Obviously, we contribute to that as well defensively and supporting the guys on offense. But, at the end of the day, [No.] 8 is what makes this work.”
The Ravens will be forced to lean on Huntley, who is 3-7 in his career as Jackson’s backup. He has even thrown seven touchdowns and seven interceptions in those 10 games spanning five seasons.

Since 2018, the Ravens are 4-12 without Jackson at quarterback with a current six-game losing streak.
