“This team activity violated Article 16.5(b) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association,” the announcement said.

According to the agreement, “no club may request a player’s consent to practice on those days for any reason” on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and December 26, except if a game falls on the 26th.
Dallas’ bye followed a 3-2 win over the Utah Hockey Club on Monday, December 23. Their next match was scheduled against Wild Minnesota on Friday, December 27.

Speaking to reporters before the game, head coach Pete DeBoer said the team “had an option and of course all the young guys showed up for the options, like they’re supposed to do.”
Mavrik Bourque, Logan Stankoven, Wyatt Johnston, Lian Bichsel, Nils Lundkvist and Thomas Harley were among the players in attendance. However, on Saturday, DeBoer described it as “voluntary ice” rather than a scheduled optional practice as he had initially said.
Travel to attend games is also prohibited during the league-mandated break. The fine money will go to the NHL Foundation.
