- Sony is considering increasing the prices of its PS5 consoles again due to US rates
- The Financial Director Lin Tao said in the questions and answers of an investor that the rates will have an impact of 100 billion yen ($ 685 million) in Sony
- It was also said that Sony is considering manufacturing consoles “locally” in the United States to avoid growing tariffs.
Sony has said that he is considering raising his hardware prices again, including PlayStation 5, in the midst of US rates.
During the company’s questions and answers on May 14, 2025, after the publication of its latest financial results, Financial Director Lin Tao shared that the recent increase in rates imposed by the Trump administration has already affected Sony and that the tariffs will have an impact of 100 billion yen ($ 685 million) in case they remain (through IGN).
Last month, Sony raised the price of the PS5 digital edition in the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, carrying the £ 390/€ 450 to £ 430/€ 500.
The PS5 and PS5 Pro base did not receive a price increase at that time, but things could change since Sony suggests that “the price” of additional costs to their hardware will happen.
“In terms of the rate, we are not only calculating the simple tariff of obtaining 100 billion yen, but thinking about the information currently available, and also looking at the market trend, we can transmit the price and also the shipping allocation,” Tao said. “So we are taking different measures to achieve the impact of 100 billion yen.”
Tao also said that Sony has three months of consoles stored in the US. [there is an] Three -month inventory [for] distribution.”

The president and executive director of Sony, Hiroki Totoki, also said that the company is considering “locally” manufacturing consoles in the United States to avoid upward tariffs.
“These hardware, of course, can occur locally,” said Totoki. “I think it would be an efficient strategy. But PS5 is being manufactured in many areas. Whether it is manufactured in the United States or not, it should be considered in the future. We are not in such a critical situation.”
There is still no official announcement of a price increase, but we will keep it informed. However, now it would be the best time to have a PS5 or PS5 pro in your hands before the consoles become potentially more expensive once again.
