Operai has introduced a new timer in the Chatgpt messages when users select the ChatGPT-5 model thinking of the model selector. The lever allows you to change between standard and extended options for thinking time.
Standard, which is the predetermined selection, balances the speed with intelligence, while extended, which was the previous default value for more users, is also available.
Chatgpt Pro users obtain two additional options: Light (the MASGABLE OPTION AVAILABLE) and HEAVY (which uses a deeper reasoning).
The new thinking time function has been introduced in response to the comments of the users that Chatgpt was spending too much time thinking about his way of thinking.
“We have heard some of you that GPT-5 Thinking responses can take more time than you want. Now you can decide what you need at the time,” says a message on the OpenAI website.
Light and standard options still use reasoning, but provide faster answers, while heavy and extended modes offer more time for deeper and more complete answers, which are useful when asking more difficult questions.
How to change the speed of thought
First, you must be a more or more professional user to do this. If you are at the top of the chatgpt screen on the web, you will see ‘chatgpt-5’. If you click this, get the option to choose between automatic, snapshot, thought and thought models.
Choose to think here, and then, in the message window, you must now see that a blue thought option has appeared with a drop -down menu from which you can alternate the standard and extended options.
Pro users, of course, will see two more options here.
It is not on the mobile
However, there is a great limitation with the new thinking time option: you can only access it on the web for now.
If you look at iOS or Android applications, you will find that the function is simply not available, and it will not happen soon. A message on the Operai website says: “We will take this control to our iOS and Android applications in the coming weeks.”
Finally, we cannot imagine that the new time of thought appears for free chatgpt users in the short term: the chat GPT-5 thinking option is only available when it updates Plus or Pro. Currently, free users can only use ChatGPT-5 in standard mode.
