- The elderly of the NSA spoke at the International Conference on Cyber Security at the University of Fordham in New York City
- They claim that Volt Typhoon wanted to stalk in the critical infrastructure of the United States. In case of war with the United States about Taiwan
- The campaign was a failure since the actors of the threat were eliminated, says Nsa
Volt Typhoon, a threat actor sponsored by the Chinese state that went to the critical infrastructure of the United States, failed to achieve its main objective: maintain long -term invisible persistence in the key objectives.
This is in accordance with the senior cybersecurity officials of the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Federal Research Office (FBI).
Speaking at the recent International Conference on Cyber Security at the University of Fordham in New York City, the agents discussed the “Typhoon” campaign as a whole, and confirmed that it was based on a possible escalation of conflicts about Taiwan.
Did not maintain persistence
“The good news is that they really failed. They wanted to persist in national networks in a very silent way for a long time so that if they needed to interrupt those networks, they were not successful in that campaign,” said Kristina Walter, director of the Cybersecurity Collaboration Center of the NSA.
“We, with the private sector, with the FBI, we found them, we understood how they were using operating systems, how they are using legitimate credentials to maintain persistence and, frankly, we equip the entire private sector and the United States government to search and detect them.”
However, being able to violate security systems and access critical infrastructure should be a reason for concern in your own right.
In mid -March 2025, it was reported that Volt Typhoon had access to the operational network (OT) of the Massachusetts electricity and electric water departments for ten months in 2023. The intrusion lasted from February to November 2023.
Before that, in January 2025, Volt Typhoon allegedly pointed to the critical infrastructure of the small island nation Guam, seeking to interrupt and sabotage in the region, according to reports, pointing to the GPA (Power Authority of Guam) to cause ravages on the island, which is the home of a large military base of the United States.
