NSC supports diplomacy on war in the region

Islamabad:

Pakistan will put on the side of peace and ready to play a constructive role in the search for a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict of Iran-Israel of which the United States now has also been part of, raising the spectrum of a broader regional war, authorities said after a civil-military group on Monday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) to discuss the deterioration of the situation in the Middle East following the United States abandoning its 45 -year -old Iran policy and launch direct attacks on its nuclear sites on Sunday.

The members of the senior cabinet, the military chiefs, including the field marshal, Syed also Munir and others, attended.

The direct participation of the United States in the Israel-Iran War has added new and dangerous dimensions to the already volatile region. He has aggravated Pakistan’s challenge, since he has to walk a tightrope in a war that has a direct relationship in the country.

In this context, civil and military leadership discussed in detail the current situation and strategy of Pakistan.

The familiar sources with development said there was a complete granimity of the opinions in the meeting that Pakistan must first protect their own national interests and follow the path of diplomacy.

They added that Pakistan, given their close links with Iran and the recent restart with the United States, under the administration of President Donald Trump, had a unique position to negotiate an agreement or facilitate a diplomatic solution.

According to the sources, Pakistan would take every opportunity and would not leave stone without moving to avoid a greater escalation.

An official brochure of the meeting declared that the prime minister presided over the NSC meeting to review the regional situation in the Israeli aggression against Iran.

The committee strongly condemned acts of aggression of Israel and expressed its regret that these military attacks coincided with a constructive negotiation process between Iran and the United States.

“These reckless actions have increased tensions, threatening to turn on a broader conflict and reduce the opportunities for dialogue and diplomacy. The NSC reaffirmed Iran’s right to personal defense as consecrated in the UN Charter,” he said.

The committee conveyed condolences to the government and the people of Iran for loss of innocent lives and prayed for the recovery of injured.

While reiterating the declared position of Pakistan, the NSC expressed a serious concern about the potential of greater escalation after the attacks against Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan on June 22, which violated the resolutions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Relevant International Law and the UN

Interestingly, NSC’s statement did not explicitly mention the United States or condemned its attacks. However, the officials referred to the part of a statement in which he said that Pakistan reiterated his “declared position”, which implies that the previous conviction statements issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the prime minister were backed by the committee. The officials ruled out the perception that there was some change in Pakistan’s position.

The NSC also reaffirmed Pakistan’s close commitment to the relevant parties and supported his willingness to continue the efforts and initiatives aimed at promoting regional peace and stability.

The NSC asked all the relevant parties to resolve the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, in line with the UN letter. The Committee stressed the need to adhere to human rights and international humanitarian laws.
