- Legislators claim that Futurewei, an R&D firm based in the United States, is actually a subsidiary of Huawei and shared space with Nvidia for more than a decade
- They argue that this joint location gave Futurewei access to sensitive technologies of semiconductors of the United States and of AI, and cite past incidents of deceptive behavior
- Officials demand documents on Futurewei’s ties with Huawei and their office location options, while Nvidia insists that their operations are still isolated
An alleged subsidiary of Huawei in the United States is at the center of espionage conversations once again, since news arose that he shared a building with Nvidia.
Bloomberg Claims that two US legislators: Republican president John Moolenaar, and the member of the Democratic classification Raja Krishnamorthi of the Select Committee of the Chamber of Representatives of China, sent a letter to Futurewei, a research and development company focused on advancing information and communications technology (ICT).
Futurewei was founded in 2001 in Santa Clara, California, and has about 400 employees. Officially, it is an R&D company based in the USA.
Huawei, Futurewei and black lists
They also asked Futurewei to explain why he shared buildings with Nvidia, claiming that he continued for at least a decade. They also argued that Futurewei made the main lease in three buildings on the site, before Nvidia took over 2024.
“This joint location provided Futurewei unprecedented access to the abilities of semiconductors and the most advanced United States,” says the letter. They also emphasized that Futurewei employees got into a Facebook summit in 2018, although Huawei was expelled from it, making employees register under false American companies.
Legislators are now asking Futurewei to deliver all documents related to their Huawei ties, as well as to provide documents related to how the company ended up choosing that exact place for its offices.
At the same time, Nvidia told the publication that it essentially does not matter who is next to: “Even where we have neighbors, we maintain a campus separated only by Nvidia.”
Huawei was famous blacklist in the United States during Trump’s first presidential mandate. At that time, the United States was building its 5G infrastructure and the Trump administration argued that Huawei could be pressed by the Chinese government to install rear posts and enable cyberdispone. Huawei, as well as the Chinese government, denied these accusations as completely unfounded.
