NYT Connections Today (Game #1034): The Answers

The answers to today’s Connections game #1034 are…
- YELLOW: PEPPERS BELL PEPPER, CAROLINA REAPER, CHIPOTLE, PEPPERONCINO
- GREEN: THINGS THAT APPEAR EJECTOR SEAT, CONNECTOR BOX, POP-UP BOOK, TOASTER
- BLUE: SWISS CHEESE DESCRIPTORS FIRM, HOLE, NUT, SWISS
- PURPLE: BLUE CHARACTERS BLUE, GENIUS, GONZO, SONIC
- My rating: Easy
- My score: Perfect
I managed to get hold of the yellow PEPPERS group quickly, but sent off my quartet with some trepidation as, in the vein of CAROLINA REAPER, both JACK-IN-THE-BOX and EJECTOR SEAT sound like they could be particularly potent capiscums.
Spotting a group of cheeses with SWISS and BLUE among the remaining tiles, I was tempted to include JACK-IN-THE-BOX here as well, but in the end the connection to TOASTER and the other THINGS THAT POP were too strong.
Meanwhile, I’m sure I’m not the only European cheese snob who would have preferred that the group containing FIRM, HOLEY, NUTTY and SWISS had been called Emmental cheese descriptors rather than SWISS CHEESE DESCRIPTORS, since there are dozens of Swiss cheeses and most of them do not contain holes. Although, to be fair, maybe the fools at Connections HQ were thinking of Appenzeller.
Answers from yesterday’s NYT Connections (Thursday, April 9, game #1033)
- YELLOW: Somber BLUE, DARK, DOWN, LOW
- GREEN: OINTMENT BALM, CREAM, PASTE, RUB
- BLUE: ZODIAC SYMBOLS ARCHER, FISH, GOAT, RAM
- PURPLE: MUSCULAR, LESS “ED” SOUND CAT, RIP, CRUSH, YOKE
What are NYT connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically need to solve the final question since you’ll be able to answer it through a process of elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little breathing room.
However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, be careful with homophones and other puns that could disguise answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
