After the initial brain meltdown at seeing 16 two-word tiles, I began to spot some common links.
My thought after completing each group was: is connection really that basic? None more so than the purple/hardest group FINISHING ANIMALS, which earned me a “first purple” badge for getting the purple group first 15 times. This gamification is a recent addition to Connections and I hadn’t really noticed it before.
Initially I thought SEA MONKEY and WHOOPEE CUSHION were “things advertised on the back of Angry magazine”.
Sea Monkeys, which used to be available by mail order but now appear in some toy stores, are quite a marketing scam, with potential buyers believing they are buying wonderful anthropomorphic creatures that will come to life when added to an aquatic tank and provide hours of fun. The reality is that they are buying brine shrimp. A life lesson to never trust hype.
Answers from yesterday’s NYT Connections (Sunday, November 2, Game #875)

- GREEN: LIGHT BROWN TONES CAMEL, FAWN, KHAKI, TAN
- BLUE: SHOWS SIGNS OF PHYSICAL EFFORT CRAMP, PANTS, REDNESS, SWEAT
- PURPLE: BEGINNINGS OF ZODIAC SIGNS WATER, CAPRI, GEM, SAG
What are NYT connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically need to solve the final question since you’ll be able to answer it through a process of elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little breathing room.
However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, be careful with homophones and other puns that could disguise answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
