NYT Connections Today (Game #870): The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game #870 are…
- YELLOW: BANALITY CHESTNUT, CLICHE, PLASTIC, TROPE
- GREEN: IN THE KNOWLEDGE CONSCIOUS, CURRENT, INTELLIGENT, WISE
- BLUE: REMOTE CONTROL BUTTONS BACK, HOME, MENU, SELECT
- PURPLE: SINGER WITH A NAME PLUS START LETTER GUSHER, KENYA, OCRE, PELVIS
- My rating: Hard
- My score: 1 error
I’m sure I wasn’t the only player tempted by the idea of forming a connection between HIP, BACK, and PELVIS today. The only thing that stopped me from putting them in a group was the lack of a quarter of the body.
My mistake came in what would later become BANALITY: I had GUSHER (as in someone who talks banally about a celebrity or paid sponsored product) instead of CHESTNUT, which I forgot was slang for an outdated joke or point of view.
I was delighted to get the purple/hardest group before the end. The draw was PELVIS, but the group also featured someone I interviewed in my past life as a music journalist in what was possibly the most awkward 30 minutes of my life after I pestered them with a cheeky question about an alleged affair and they spent the rest of the interview answering “yes,” “no,” or “I don’t care.”
Answers from yesterday’s NYT Connections (Monday, October 27, game #869)

- BLUE: cocktail garnishes CHERRY, MINT, OLIVE, TWIST
- PURPLE: ___FOUR CONNECT, FABULOUS, FANTASTIC, SMALL
- YELLOW: EMANATE BRANCH, FAN, RADIATION, PROPAGATION
What are NYT connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically need to solve the final question since you’ll be able to answer it through a process of elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little breathing room.
However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, be careful with homophones and other puns that could disguise answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
