The six -time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lockte and his wife, model Kayla Rae Reid, announced on Instagram on Wednesday that they are finishing their marriage.

TMZ reported that Reid requested divorce earlier this year, a decision that emerged “after a deep prayer and reflection,” he said.

“I maintain the marriage of the highest consideration, so it has been one of the most painful, revealing and challenging seasons of my life. I have doubted to share until I can do it from a place of healing, not fresh and open wounds,” Reid wrote.

“Sometimes we face evidence that we do not choose or see coming. And at that time, we are forced to make the most difficult decisions to protect our peace, our children and our future. I have come to understand that staying is not always the most loving decision that someone can take. For me, to leave it was an act of love, for those around me and for me.”
