One of the largest fiber broadband companies in the United States, Brightspeed, is said to be investigating a possible data breach and theft affecting more than one million customers.
Last weekend, a hacking group calling itself Crimson Collective posted a new message on its Telegram channel, notifying its followers about the attack:
“If anyone has someone working at BrightSpeed, tell them to read their mail quickly! We have over 1 million residential users’ PII in our hands,” the group was quoted as saying. He also added that he will release samples on Monday night, “giving them some time to get back to us first.”
Claims under investigation
According to Crimson Collective, that personally identifiable information (PII) they stole includes people’s names, email addresses, phone numbers, mailing addresses, user account information linked to user/session IDs, payment history, partial payment card information, and appointment/order records.
Brightspeed has yet to confirm or deny these claims. The company’s website and social channels do not mention any violations, and the company told media it is currently investigating it:
“We take the security of our networks and the protection of our customers’ and employees’ information seriously and are rigorous in securing our networks and monitoring for threats. We are currently investigating reports of a cybersecurity event,” Brightspeed said. beepcomputer. “As we learn more, we will keep our customers, employees and authorities informed.”
