- OpenAI’s communications director, Hannah Wong, will step down from her role in the coming weeks.
- Vice President of Communications Lindsey Held Bolton will keep an eye on things while a replacement is found.
- George Osborne recently joined OpenAI as a government liaison
OpenAI Chief Communications Officer Hannah Wong announced that she will be leaving the company at the end of January, approximately a year and a half after her appointment in August 2024.
Wong joined OpenAI in 2021 from Apple when the company was still a small research lab, before interest in the company increased following the public release of the ChatGPT preview.
Under his leadership, the company’s communications team grew from about eight workers to more than 50 across the US, Europe and Asia, but the time has come for OpenAI to find his replacement.
OpenAI communications director resigns
“After almost five years at OpenAI and much reflection, I have decided it is time to step back and move on to my next chapter,” Wong wrote, indicating that the decision to leave the company was his and not OpenAI’s.
Wong will take some time to be with his family before taking on his next role.
Meanwhile, VP of Communications Lindsey Held Bolton will lead the communications team, and Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch will be tasked with finding the next chief communications officer.
The news comes the same week that OpenAI confirmed that former UK chancellor George Osborne would become the company’s country director of OpenAI, a role that will see him liaise with governments to help modernize systems and integrate productivity-boosting AI into more public services.
The company’s leaders also have a lot more on their plates, including the $500 billion Project Stargate, the recent launch of Sora 2, the updated GPT-5.2, and even a possible restructuring ahead of a rumored IPO.
“Hannah has been instrumental in shaping how people understand OpenAI and the work we do,” CEO Sam Altman and CEO of Applications Fidji Simo said in a joint statement.
