OpenAI is adding “enterprise knowledge” access to ChatGPT for business, enterprise, and education users, allowing the popular AI tool to connect with third-party tools like Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, and GitHub, so the chatbot can provide more personalized responses for your business.
The company’s knowledge is powered by a version of GPT-5’s reasoning capabilities, so you can make comparisons from multiple sources and, as you’d expect when it matters most, ChatGPT will also cite sources to improve trust.
After initiating connections, users can access company knowledge through a separate button in the message composing area.
ChatGPT gives business users company insight
“The company’s insight has changed the way I use ChatGPT at work more than anything we’ve created so far,” explained COO Brad Lightcap.
OpenAI says enterprise knowledge will ultimately lead to the destruction of silos where workers will be able to combine multiple sets of knowledge from across the enterprise to create more informed outcomes.
The tool was primarily designed to assist with reporting, planning, research, and client preparation, eliminating all timely manual processes that workers currently have to perform.
OpenAI emphasized that the company’s insights tool respects existing privacy permissions and that “OpenAI never trains on your data by default.” All usual security, compliance and control systems also remain in place according to the organization’s policies.
When linking third-party apps, ChatGPT can still reference them for certain snippets of knowledge, but to invoke company knowledge for more detailed reports, users will need to manually select the option.
The company also emphasized that allowing company knowledge effectively disables Internet access to force ChatGPT to cite those sources, so there is no web searching or graph/image creation in this mode.
“You can disable it and continue working on the same conversation to use these capabilities, maintaining your existing context,” OpenAI explained. However, these two experiences should become more aligned and integrated in the coming months.
