- There is another leak about OpenAI’s next device
- Apparently it could take the form of a smart pen.
- Several devices could currently be in process
We know that ChatGPT developer OpenAI is working on a real device of some description, with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, no less, and the latest rumor is that the device will take the form of a pen.
This comes from well-known tipster Smart Pikachu (via Android Authority), who says that a pen is one of three different ideas being considered right now as OpenAI makes deals with manufacturing partners.
Of course, in addition to being able to scribble notes, this pen should also be able to give you some kind of AI assistance: perhaps recording your writing and voice memos, for example (we’ve seen multiple smart pens in the past).
All indications are that whatever this device ends up being, it will have some kind of always-on listening feature, with ChatGPT available to make sense of your notes and discussions, and give you on-demand answers when you need them.
A calmer environment
As many requested, small supply chain updates on the Openai/Jony ive hardware project have now been confirmed twice: – the internal codename is “Gumdrop” 🍬 – the project was originally assigned to Luxshare 立讯 – it will now likely move to Foxconn after a dispute over the location of the manufacturing site. We don’t get much more information about what’s coming from this particular leak, although the tipster mentions that the device’s internal codename is apparently Gumdrop, so make of that what you will.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has gone on record saying that the device should feel like a “lakeside cabin.” This certainly suggests something with a calmer vibe than a smartphone and something that works mostly in the background.
Previous leaks have supported Smart Pikachu’s claim that several different devices are in the works, although it remains to be seen how many of them will actually be released. For example, a wearable pin and a smart speaker have been mentioned.
Standalone AI devices like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 haven’t fared very well in the past, although we also know that Google and Amazon are busy bringing updated AI assistants to their smart displays and speakers.
