In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the opposition alliance is approaching a simple majority, since it is now only 20 seats to incline the balance of power in the provincial assembly.
The government led by Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) currently has 92 seats, while opposition numbers have increased to 53, after the restoration of reserved seats after a verdict of the Supreme Court.
The KP assembly has a total resistance of 145, but at this time, there are 115 chosen members. Of the remaining 30, 26 seats are reserved for women and four for minorities.
The Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP) issued on Wednesday a notification with respect to the seats reserved after the verdict on June 27 granted by the Constitutional Bank of the Supreme Court.
After the court ruling, the ECP restored the reserved seats, increasing the position of the opposition within the assembly.
Jamiat Ulema-E-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), which had seven chosen members, received 10 women and two minority seats, carrying its total to 19.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which began with six chosen members, obtained nine reserved seats and is now at 15.
The Pakistan Popular Party (PPP) account increased from four to 11 after being assigned to 6 women and 1 minority seat.
PTI parliamentarians now have three seats, instead of two, and the National Awami (ANP) party also has three seats after obtaining a reserved seat.
In addition, two independent members of the Provincial Assembly (MPA), Hisham Inamullah and Ali Haider, are aligned with the opposition alliance, even more strengthening their position.
To form a simple majority, a part or the alliance needs support from at least 73 members. With 52 confirmed members and the support of the two independents, the opposition still requires that the rest of the seats reach that threshold.
Talking with Geographical newsThe opposition leader in KP said that while they have not yet made any formal decision, they would need some more members for most.
He pointed out that in the budget session, they had made it clear that this was the 12th and last budget of PTI, “unless the KP government seriously focuses on governance, law and order.” “We are not in that for good,” he said.
