Oracle and OpenAI abandon plans for Stargate AI mega data center in US


  • Stargate’s Texas data center expansion to 2GW could be scrapped, limiting it to 1.2GW
  • The Abilene campus has already faced a number of challenges
  • OpenAI may want to focus on adapting to newer chips

Oracle and OpenAI (via Bloomberg) scrapped plans to expand the Abilene, Texas-based Stargate AI data center campus, which is part of the $500 billion Project Stargate designed to grow US AI infrastructure.

Currently, Abilene is a two-building campus, but another six buildings are scheduled to come online this year, bringing total capacity to approximately 1.2 GW.
