Pakistan backs Saudi-UAE peace efforts in Yemen

Islamabad calls on Yemeni parties to engage constructively, warns against unilateral measures amid territorial crisis

Pakistan has expressed its full support for Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic efforts to ensure peace and stability in Yemen, while praising the role of the UAE in the process.

“Pakistan is closely following recent developments in Yemen,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday. The statement comes amid a sharp escalation in Yemen, where the Southern Transitional Council (STC) took control of two major eastern provinces in early December.

Saudi Arabia publicly demanded the STC’s withdrawal from the provinces on Thursday, calling it an “unjustified escalation,” while the STC accused Riyadh of launching airstrikes against its positions on Friday. The STC now effectively controls most of the former “South Yemen”, raising fears of a new conflict in a civil war that has continued since 2014.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs underlined the need to defend the unity and territorial integrity of Yemen, expressing hope that “Yemeni stakeholders will avoid any unilateral steps that could result in further escalation of the situation.”

Pakistan has called on all Yemeni parties to engage with each other constructively and in good faith to achieve a negotiated political solution based on agreed parameters.

“Pakistan expresses its hope that ongoing diplomatic efforts will result in concrete steps towards achieving lasting peace in the country and ending the suffering of the Yemeni people,” the statement concluded.
