Pakistan, China agrees to extend the CPEC to Afghanistan

Pakistan, China and Afghanistan have agreed to extend the Economic Corridor of China-Pakistan (CPEC) to the Afghan territory, marking a significant step in trilateral cooperation under the Belt and Road initiative.

The agreement occurred during an informal trilateral meeting held in Beijing on Wednesday between the Vice Prime Minister of Pakistan and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, Amir Khan Muttaqi.

The authorities described conversations as constructive, with discussions focused on deepening diplomatic participation, improving regional connectivity and promoting trade, infrastructure and development.

The three parties described their vital cooperation for regional stability and agreed that economic integration was key to shared progress. They also emphasized the importance of combating terrorism and working collectively towards peace and sustainable development.

During his bilateral meeting with Wang Yi, the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for China’s central interests and thanked Beijing for his constant support for Pakistan’s sovereignty and security.

Wang Yi described Pakistan as the “iron brother” of China and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the regional development and stability of Pakistan. Both parties expressed their satisfaction with the continuous progress of CPEC and welcomed the participation of third parties in their second phase.

The ministers also discussed the improvement of cooperation in agriculture, ICT, industry and investment. They promised to maintain coordination in regional and global forums and reiterated their commitment to multilateralism.

The Vice Prime Minister Ishaq Dar asked for a peaceful resolution of the JAMMU and Kashmir dispute in line with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, describing it as essential for long -term peace in southern Asia.
