Pakistan points to 10,000 tons of sesame exports to China in 2025

Pakistan is working to achieve an export objective of 10,000 metric tons of sesame seeds to China in 2025 under agricultural cooperation initiatives linked to the Chinese-Pakistan economic corridor. Officials and industry representatives say that the effort is supported by contract cultivation projects, technology transfer and infrastructure improvements that are carried out with Chinese assistance.

China Machinery Engineering Corporation has expanded sesame agriculture to about 5,000 acres in Pakistan. The company has introduced modern agricultural practices, provided training to farmers and implemented quality standards to guarantee the consistency in production. This collaboration is intended to strengthen the sesame supply chain and prepare farmers to meet the growing demand of Chinese buyers.

Pakistan sesame exports to China have shown rapid growth in recent years. In 2024, trade was valued at around 226 million US dollars. Officials predict that exports could continue to increase abruptly in the coming years, since the Chinese demand for sesame products, including cooking oil and healthy foods, remains strong. Some estimates suggest that Pakistan general agricultural exports to China could reach more than 20 billion American dollars in the long term if cooperation under the Belt and Road initiative continues to expand.

Analysts say that contract agriculture offers farmers greater stability by guaranteeing access to buyers and guidance on cultivation practices. Research institutions in both countries have tested suitable sesame varieties for local soil and climatic conditions. Improved seeds, the use of fertilizers and pest management are emphasized as key elements to improve performance and maintain export quality.

At the same time, the challenges remain. Extreme climatic events and floods can interrupt planting or reduce production in some areas. There are also concerns about whether all farmers can adopt modern practices quickly. Complying with the quality and phytosanitary standards necessary for Chinese markets is considered essential to maintain the commercial relationship.

China’s demand for sesame is significant, with imports greater than one million metric tons annually. Pakistan, due to its geographical proximity and its expanding production base, is being positioned as a reliable supplier. Achieving objective 2025 of 10,000 metric tons would represent an important step to strengthen bilateral commercial ties and improve farmers’ income. Officials believe that the initiative highlights the broader potential of CPEC promoted agricultural cooperation for Pakistan’s economy.
